APOTHIKI BEIJING - European Contemporary China

> program 2005

‘Apothiki Beijing European Contemporary China ' is a 450 square meters multi-functional art centre and gallery space that will open its doors on 8 May 2005. It is located in 'East End Art Village' in the direct vicinity of the Dashanzi Art District (798 factory), the heart of the growing art and culture community in Beijing.

The main objectives of the centre are the following:
•  promote European Contemporary art, artists and cultural initiatives in China
•  organise and enhance exchanges and contacts between European and Chinese artists, both in Europe and China
•  facilitate dialogue and understanding between European and Chinese contemporary art initiatives through close cooperation with art organisations, art centres, academies, galleries, curators, publishers, foundations and individual artists
•  provide a professional exhibition space in Beijing
•  contribute to the broader cultural exchanges that are emerging between the EU and China

To achieve these goals, the major activities and projects planned are the following:
•  organisation of major exhibitions in Beijing of contemporary art of EU member states
•  focussing in particular on the contemporary art scene in the country holding the six month EU presidency
•  inviting curators of EU member states to organise and sponsor exhibitions and set up contemporary conceptual projects in any given media
•  strengthening the networking between Chinese and European art organisations through seminars, conferences and round table (Art Table) meetings
•  organising Artist in Residence programmes to allow European artists to work and exhibit in China (art studios available)
•  assisting artist and galleries to explore and enter the Chinese art scene and markets
•  Inviting European Galleries to take part in the ‘Beijing Guest Gallery Project' and expose their artists and collections in the Chinese capital
•  Organising ‘art visits' to provide art managers and professionals with a comprehensive network of artists and art initiatives and a profile of the current contemporary art scene in China
•  Providing information about cultural events in Europe (art fairs, main galleries, etc) and establishing a network of art organisations in Europe and China.

Who are we?

The ‘Apothiki-Beijing / European Contemporary China' is an initiative of two Belgians, Hilde Van Lindt and Dirk Drijbooms who created a similar art centre in May 2004 on the Cycladic Island of Paros in Greece.
In Beijing , they will work closely with local partners who are active in the local art scene and art academies.

A local Chinese company has been registered in Beijing and an International non profit Association
(Apothiki vzw ) has been established in Belgium with headquarters in Brussels.

Apothiki is also member of RESARTIS, a global network of residential art centres.
