Laurel Johannesson Laurel Johannesson
Laurel Johannesson is a Canadian artist who studied at the University of Calgary, Canada (MFA), the University of Saskatchewan, Canada (BFA and BA) and the Royal College of Art in London, England. With degree specializations in Printmaking, Digital Media, Drawing and Painting and a background in Photography and Video, her work often crosses the boundaries between all of theses areas.

Her sensual, liquid images reference mythology, memory, personal history, and self-portraiture and are often dependent on a response to time and place. In the imagery, a female figure is revealed and concealed…enveloped in a fragile watery environment that casts a liquid veil of mystery, shielding and camouflaging the face and body. There is a fragility and a vulnerability to the imagery that hints at the equation between desire and voyeurism.

In 2005, Laurel was an invited Artist in Residence at the Association of Icelandic Visual Artists in Reykjavik, Iceland as well as the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts in Skopelos, Greece and has exhibited her work extensively in Canada as well as internationally including countries such as Greece, England, India, Iceland, Japan, Chile, and the United States. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and her work is included in many prestigious public, private and corporate collections. Laurel Johannesson is currently Head of the Drawing Program and Professor of Print Media and Drawing at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, Canada.

Laurel Johannesson takes part in the 2006 'Artists in Residence' program by Apothiki Gallery.
