Wem Cornelissen works in Gent and Budapest and teaches at the National Academy of Fine Arts in the Hungarian capital.
He started as a 'configurative' painter and searched his own style based on his life experience aware that most artists define then way' and style based on experiences that are very much determined by elements such as 'time and space', which he uses very selectively in his work.
He takes a distance from so called 'academic aesthetics' respecting it but keeping a distance at the same time.
'Extreme beauty can stand on its own'...the human story is central in his work.. .Wem is inspired by the ordinary things and events that characterise human existence.. .His mind plays games with reality showing the little waves on the surface but suggesting 'depth' instead...His passion goes to people and material things alike. Industrial decay and archaeology inspire him and make him reflect on earlier Utopian times in his life.
He often uses 'computer programmes' to develop his painting...testing different colours and methods before having to choose the final one... He compares hundreds of projects developed with the help of his computer before making up his mind and starting his piece of art...it keeps his creative mind going!
His belief in a better world is not shaken. He is an optimist and his joy is shown by his paintings that are often rich of bright colours and full of inspiration... |
